Re:Nylon
Prada has always utilized nylon as a main material. The brand's ’84 debut of Pocone in its collection of accessories and bags won it worldwide acclaim. Miuccia Prada expanded the collection to include nylon dresses for her own label as well as Linea Rossa, the nylon-heavy collection of a buzzbeast-ready, sexy diffusion that Frank Ocean recently dressed himself in for the Met Gala. The Milan-based powerhouse has changed its iconic nylon bags into sustainable recycled nylon fabrics. The new collection features six classic styles - bags for belts (pictured), shoulder bags (pictured), a tote bag (pictured) as well as a duffle bag (pictured) and two backpacks - in recycled ECONYL fabrics that are made from recycled plastics and fishing nets.
The material that is recycled is the result of a partnership with Aquafil the textile yarn producer in Italy that produces Econyl fabric from regenerated nylon waste. This fabric can be reused many times without losing its quality. It's part a larger plan to move from virgin nylon to re:Nylon across the entire Prada portfolio by 2021, The Business of Fashion reports. In addition to the six Re:Nylon bags, the range also includes a pair of shoes and boots made from repurposed ECONYL as well as various apparel items made of the same fabrication.
To celebrate the launch, Prada partnered with National Geographic to create a series of videos called "What We Carry" that shows the cutting-edge process which is used to make Re:Nylon bags. The first video is a collaboration between Bonnie Wright, an environmentalist and Harry Potter actress, as well as National Geographic explorer Asher Jay visiting a carpet recycling plant in Arizona which transforms old nylon into repurposed ECONYL.
With the shift to re:Nylon Prada is achieving the biggest reduction in virgin nylon use yet, saving 70 000 barrels of oil every year, The Business of Fashion reports. The move will also reduce the carbon emissions of the company by around 57,000 tonnes. The label has just gone fur-free on its clothing and accessories. This is the most recent sustainability initiative.
Recycled nylon
Recycled nylon does not come without its disadvantages. It isn't biodegradable and will sit in landfills or oceans for a long time until it is broken down into smaller pieces which can harm wildlife. The fabric also sheds microplastics after washing. However, it uses 50 percent less energy to produce compared to regular virgin nylon and is more durable than other bag materials such as wool or cotton.

The fabric is made of an amalgamation of waste plastics and petroleum, which is derived from fossil fuels. This helps reduce the need for more natural resources, as well as the carbon emissions resulting from the production of virgin nylon. It is also more manageable than other bags because it doesn't have to be dyed or woven. This makes it a great option for bags that will be used frequently, such as gym and yoga equipment.
In addition to its environmental advantages, recycled nylon is a stronger and more flexible fabric than traditional cotton or polyester. It is also able to withstand a lot of abuse and is therefore ideal for backpacks and other outdoor equipment. The material is also incredibly lightweight and is easily cut and stitched to form the desired shape of bags. Nylon is a fantastic fabric for outdoor gear, because it's resistant to water and does not absorb smells.
When choosing a sustainable bag ensure that you look for the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 certification. This certification test chemical residues, aswell as social and environmental responsibility. Look for brands that have this certification, as they are likely to be more transparent and responsible when it comes to their products.
Patagonia is a good example. It offers a range of yoga equipment and backpacks made of recycled nylon, which is known as Econyl. The nylon is produced using a closed-loop method that requires 50% less energy than regular virgin nylon. The brand also helps organizations which are dedicated to protecting our planet.
